Supervision is widely treated as subject-matter mentoring. In practice its highest-value function is scope control.

A student's first research question is almost always too large, too unanswerable, or too dependent on data nobody will hand over. A good supervisor identifies which of those three failure modes is in play within the first meeting and says so plainly.

Everything after that, method, literature, structure, is comparatively mechanical. Getting the question right is the whole game.
